New Mercies

New Mercies

In the book of Lamentations, we read in chapter 3:

“It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning: great is Thy faithfulness.” (Lamentations 3:22–23)

It’s a verse many of us have heard throughout our lives, yet few realize it comes from Lamentations — a book filled with sorrow, mourning, and deep grief. These verses sit in the middle of poetic laments over the destruction of Jerusalem.

This was no small tragedy. Imagine our greatest enemy invading and conquering our capital city — not just taking it, but utterly destroying it. We would be brokenhearted, mourning our nation, and uncertain of what the future holds.

That’s exactly where Israel found themselves. And yet, right in the middle of this book of lament, the author pauses to remember and remind others that it is because of God that they have not been consumed. It is His compassion that has not failed — His mercy that continues to sustain. “The mercies of God are new every morning. Great is Thy faithfulness.”

How many of our hymns and songs of worship are born from this very truth — that even in the midst of pain and loss, God’s goodness does not falter? It’s in our seasons of sorrow that we most clearly see His steadfast love and enduring faithfulness.

I don’t know what you may be walking through today, but I hope as you read this — and maybe sip your morning coffee — you’re reminded of the goodness of God. Even when we feel like we’re failing, it is He who sustains us. Take comfort in His renewed mercy and His great faithfulness.
